How to Spot Roof Problems

It can be difficult to notice issues with your roof until they start affecting your daily life,

especially if you don’t know what to look out for. There are a number of things that could harm

the integrity of your roof, and we’ll address some of the more common ones below. If you don’t

feel like getting on a ladder and checking it out yourself, our roofing team is happy to inspect

your roof for possible damages and fix any problems if needed. Either way, it’s helpful to know

what may warrant a call to CECO Contracting.

Shingle Damage

If your shingles are curled, cracked, or missing, this is an indication that the shingles are coming

to the end of their lifespan. Curling shingles are typically a sign of aging, but can also be caused

by poor ventilation or too much moisture. Cracked or missing shingles will result in less

protection from the elements and could become a very annoying issue for you and your family.

The more damaged your shingles seem, the more you should consider calling CECO

Black Algae Stains On Roof Shingles

If you notice dark streaks on your roof, this is most likely black algae, a common roof issue

caused by humidity. While black algae isn’t harmful or dangerous to people, it will damage your

shingles’ UV protection, causing them to dry out and become much less effective. Keep an eye

out for small black spots that may indicate algae growth, especially if you have asphalt shingles,

which are more susceptible to the issue. While homeowners usually won’t take notice until the

algae starts streaking, which can be 2 or more months later, catching the problem early will be

easier on your roof and your wallet.

Moss Growth On Roof

Like algae, moss is a plant that can grow on any surface, and this includes your roof. Once

making a home out of your roof it acts as a sponge, absorbing and storing rainwater and

eventually saturating the roof sheathing below. While moss is typically easier to clean than algae

and causes less damage, it’s still important to have it removed to ensure that your roof stays

intact.

Thermal Water Splitting

Thermal splitting of asphalt shingles is an issue all homeowners should be aware of. As the

temperature rises and falls, your shingles will expand and contract, causing them to crack. Unlike

surface cracking, which is a sign of age, thermal splitting splits the shingle completely. This

messes with the waterproof integrity of the shingles, and if left undetected will let moisture into

your home through the shingles and other parts of the roof, which is certainly something you’ll

want to fix as quickly as possible.

Roof Condensation

Roof condensation is one of the more pressing issues your roof can have, as it can cause serious

structural damage. This problem is more likely to occur during the colder winter months as the

heated air inside your home rises up to the roof. When the resulting moisture has nowhere to go,

it soaks into the surrounding materials and leads to roof problems like mold and insects. Look

out for wet streaks or dripping, as these are the most common signs of condensation issues.

If you have noticed one of these issues or simply want an inspection to learn the status of your roof, CECO Contracting will provide you with exceptional services at an affordable price.

With the professional team at CECO Contracting, your roof will be in great hands!
